I'm an Amazon Seller! Now What?

Growing Pains

Many growing companies use Amazon FBA (Fulfillment By Amazon). It’s a method of selling through a well-known online fulfillment company.

While Amazon FBA is a great way to facilitate sales, there is a learning curve involved. They have some very specific rules about accepting your inventory. When they fulfill on your behalf, they need to ensure your product won’t spill or fall apart during shipping to them, or while being inventoried or (heaven forbid!) while shipping to the customer.

As such, you, the Amazon seller, will need to ship your product to them packaged and prepared to meet their requirements. This typically involves individual product being self-contained and barcode labelled to reflect its individual unique FNSKU (or Fulfilment Network Stock Keeping Unit) assigned by Amazon.

Familiarize yourself with all of Amazon’s “Packaging and prep requirements”. Their “Seller Central” does give notice that “Inventory that arrives at a fulfillment center without proper preparation or labeling may incur a preparation fee.” Get your product to market and sell it. Mitigate delays and “Unplanned services” costs. In fact, keep an eye open and read everything in the boxes they highlight in yellow. Their instructions provide fair warning.

Depending on the type of unit you are selling, this often means your product should be polybagged and sealed, with a barcode applied. Here are a couple of examples:

Selling as a Set

Are you selling a set of products as one selling unit? The set must be packaged as one single unit and labelled that they are to be sold as a set. It is Amazon’s expectation that you ship to them with your selling units ready for inventory and ready for sale.

Packaging Product

Packaged items that need to be polybagged and completely sealed include “pourable” products like pellets, powders, and granular products. Don’t forget that the poly bag you use has requirements too, like thickness and a suffocation warning.

Accurately prepared product means Amazon acceptance. Selling through Amazon can help you translate all the hard work you put into your product into dollar signs for you!
